Insurance Coverage and Payment Information
Many insurance providers offer coverage for all or part of the cost of eye exams for each family member. However, we recommend reviewing your specific insurance policy to confirm the details of your coverage for yourself and anyone else listed on your plan.
Alberta Health Coverage
Routine eye exams for individuals under the age of 19 and those 65 and older, with a valid Alberta Health Care card, are primarily covered by Alberta Health. However, due to significant funding cuts by Alberta Health in February 2025, these patients should expect a $40 flat fee billed to private insurance or out of pocket per visit.
Medically Necessary Visits
Visits for medically necessary reasons, such as eye infections or sudden vision changes, are also mostly covered by Alberta Health for patients of all ages, though the $40 flat fee will still apply.
Private Insurance and Out-of-Pocket Costs
Routine eye exams for individuals ages 19-64 are not covered by Alberta Health. However, many private or employer-sponsored health insurance plans may cover all or part of these services. For your convenience, our office can directly bill most third-party insurance providers.
Eye Exams and Early Detection
Eye exams are crucial for the early detection of eye diseases and the maintenance of overall eye health. In addition, routine exams can identify systemic conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed. We recommend scheduling your baby’s first eye exam at 6 months of age to rule out serious vision-threatening conditions, such as congenital cataracts or retinoblastoma.
